Brassica rapa var. rapa
Turnips are a fast-maturing brassica that can be sown repeatedly from spring to late summer for a succession of harvests in as little as 6-8 weeks. Young roots are tender and sweet; left to grow too large they become tough and pithy. They also provide useful winter greens (turnip tops) from autumn sowings, making them a productive and flexible crop for small plots.

Varieties
Purple Top Milan is a flat-rooted heritage turnip with distinctive purple shoulders and white flesh, fast-maturing and very popular in Italy and France. It has a sweet, delicate flavour when harvested young and is well suited to early spring or autumn sowing. The colourful roots are as attractive as they are tasty.
Tokyo Cross is a fast-maturing F1 turnip producing small, round, pure-white roots in as little as 35-40 days from sowing. It is tender, mild, and sweet when harvested young, and can be grown in succession throughout the season for continuous pickings. One of the most popular turnip varieties for UK kitchen gardens.
Issues & threats
Wilting
EnvironmentalPlants are drooping or losing vigour. Most commonly caused by water stress but can also indicate root damage, vascular disease, or heat scorch. Identifying the cause quickly is important as some causes are serious.
Poor germination

Damping off

Yellowing leaves
EnvironmentalLeaves are turning yellow, which can indicate a range of problems including nutrient deficiency, overwatering, disease, or natural senescence. Identifying whether the pattern is upper or lower leaves, whole leaves or between veins, is key to diagnosis.
Stunted growth

Clubroot

A severe soil-borne disease causing grotesque swelling and distortion of brassica roots. Infected plants cannot take up water or nutrients effectively and typically collapse or die back. Spores survive in soil for up to 20 years. One of the most serious diseases affecting the brassica family.
