Radish is one of the fastest-maturing vegetables, ready to pull in as little as 3-4 weeks from sowing. Its speed makes it ideal for succession sowing to maintain a continuous supply, and as a catch crop slotted between slower vegetables. Summer varieties are round or elongated and mild; winter types are larger, peppery, and store well.

  • -Remove stones and break up compaction for straight, even roots
  • -Avoid fresh manure - causes excessive leafy growth at the expense of the root

Sowing notes

  • -Sow direct - radishes do not transplant well
  • -Succession sow every 2-3 weeks for continuous harvest throughout the season
  • -Avoid peak summer heat - radishes bolt quickly in hot, dry conditions
  • -August and September sowings avoid flea beetle pressure and often produce the best roots

Harvest notes

  • -Pull as soon as roots reach finger-size - roots become pithy and hot-flavoured if left too long
  • -Check daily once roots begin to size up

Storage tips

  • -Remove leaves before storing - they draw moisture from the root
  • -Winter radishes can be left in the ground or stored in damp sand for several months

Wilting

Environmental

Plants are drooping or losing vigour. Most commonly caused by water stress but can also indicate root damage, vascular disease, or heat scorch. Identifying the cause quickly is important as some causes are serious.

Seeds are emerging unevenly or not at all. Usually caused by soil temperature being too low, seeds sown too deep, poor seed-to-soil contact, or old seed stock.

A severe soil-borne disease causing grotesque swelling and distortion of brassica roots. Infected plants cannot take up water or nutrients effectively and typically collapse or die back. Spores survive in soil for up to 20 years. One of the most serious diseases affecting the brassica family.
