Varieties
Bell Boy is one of the most reliable sweet bell peppers for UK growing conditions, producing blocky, thick-walled fruits that ripen from green to red. It is an F1 variety with good disease resistance and a compact habit suitable for greenhouse borders or large containers. Widely available and consistently high-yielding.
Cayenne is a classic hot chilli producing long, thin, fiery red fruits that are used fresh, dried, or ground into spice. It is a vigorous, high-yielding plant that performs well in UK greenhouses or polytunnels and is one of the easiest chillies for beginners. Heat level is medium-hot, building as fruits ripen from green to red.
Issues & threats
Wilting
EnvironmentalPlants are drooping or losing vigour. Most commonly caused by water stress but can also indicate root damage, vascular disease, or heat scorch. Identifying the cause quickly is important as some causes are serious.
Poor germination

Aphids

Whitefly

Tiny white-winged insects that cluster on leaf undersides and fly up in clouds when disturbed. Both adults and immature stages suck plant sap, weakening growth and depositing honeydew that encourages sooty mould.
Spider mites

Tiny mites (barely visible to the naked eye) that feed on the underside of leaves, causing pale stippling and fine webbing. Thrive in hot, dry conditions and reproduce extremely rapidly - populations can explode in a polytunnel or glasshouse during a heat wave.
Chewing damage
PestGeneral chewing damage from an unidentified pest, leaving holes or missing leaf sections. May be caused by caterpillars, beetles, or other insects. Inspect at dusk to identify the culprit.
Sap-sucking pests
