Parsnips are a long-season root vegetable with notoriously slow and erratic germination - fresh seed and patience are essential. They occupy the ground for most of the year but can be left in the ground all winter, improving in sweetness after hard frosts. They prefer deep, stone-free soil to produce straight, long roots and should be sown direct as they dislike transplanting.

Varieties
Gladiator is an F1 parsnip variety with excellent canker resistance and reliable germination, making it one of the best choices for home growers. It produces smooth, white-skinned roots with a sweet, nutty flavour and is more uniform than heritage varieties. Its disease resistance makes it particularly suited to heavier soils.
Tender and True is a long-established, exhibition-quality parsnip producing very long, tapered, white-skinned roots with excellent flavour. It is a reliable open-pollinated variety that has been grown in UK gardens for over a century. Needs deep, stone-free soil to reach its full potential length of 35-45 cm.
Issues & threats
Wilting
EnvironmentalPlants are drooping or losing vigour. Most commonly caused by water stress but can also indicate root damage, vascular disease, or heat scorch. Identifying the cause quickly is important as some causes are serious.
Poor germination

Yellowing leaves

Stunted growth

Carrot fly
