Allium

Onions are a kitchen staple grown from seed or sets (small bulbs). Sets are far easier for beginners - simply press them into firm soil in spring and lift a full crop in summer. A long-season crop, they need an open, sunny site and good drainage to develop hard, well-shaped bulbs for long storage.
