Leeks are hardy winter alliums that tolerate hard frost and stand in the ground until needed. They require a long season - sown indoors in late winter and transplanted in early summer into deep, fertile soil. Blanching the lower stem by earthing up produces longer, sweeter white shanks.

  • -Sow indoors or in a seedbed from February to April
