The carrot is a biennial root vegetable grown as an annual in kitchen gardens. Cultivated forms are typically orange due to high beta-carotene content, though heirloom varieties range from white and yellow to red, purple, and black. In its first year it produces the edible taproot; in the second it bolts to flower and seed.

Preparation

  • -Remove all stones and break up compaction to at least 30 cm depth
  • -Do not add fresh manure - causes forking and hairy roots
  • -Well-rotted compost from a previous season can be incorporated, but avoid adding direct
  • -Rake to a fine tilth before sowing - large clods cause misshapen roots

Sowing notes

  • -Always direct sow - carrots do not transplant well due to sensitive taproots
  • -Sow thinly to minimise thinning, which attracts carrot fly
  • -Early sowings (Feb-Mar) benefit from cloche or fleece protection
  • -Main outdoor sowing season is April to June
  • -Late sowings (Jun-Jul) can provide an autumn crop
  • -Germination is slow - typically 14-21 days - keep soil consistently moist throughout

Propagation

  • -Always direct sow - taproots are easily damaged and transplanting almost always fails
  • -Sow seed 5 mm deep in rows or blocks in fine, well-raked soil
  • -Thin seedlings in stages to a final spacing of 5-8 cm - disturb soil as little as possible
  • -Water the row before and after thinning to settle soil and reduce the volatile scent that attracts carrot fly
  • -Seed can be mixed with sand to help achieve even, sparse sowing

Harvest notes

  • -Pull when roots reach usable size - they can be left in the ground and harvested as needed
  • -Harvest before heavy frosts unless protecting in-ground roots with straw
  • -Avoid harvesting in very wet soil to prevent surface damage to roots
  • -Twist foliage off cleanly rather than cutting to reduce moisture loss during storage

Storage tips

  • -Remove foliage before storing - it draws moisture from the root
  • -Do not wash before storage - brush off loose soil only
  • -Check stored roots every few weeks and remove any showing softness or rot
  • -Carrots can overwinter in the ground through mild winters under a thick straw covering
