Preparation

  • -Remove stones which cause forking and irregular root development
  • -Incorporate well-rotted compost; avoid fresh manure which causes excessive leafy growth

Sowing notes

  • -Each corky seed cluster contains 2-4 seeds - thin to one seedling per station after germination
  • -Soak seeds for an hour before sowing to aid germination
  • -Earliest sowings (March) benefit from cloche protection
  • -Succession sow every 3-4 weeks for continuous supply through summer
  • -July sowings produce small tender roots for autumn harvest

Harvest notes

  • -Harvest when roots reach golf-ball to tennis-ball size for best flavour and texture
  • -Twist foliage off rather than cutting to reduce 'bleeding' of colour from the root
  • -Roots can remain in the ground through mild weather; protect with straw in harder frosts

Storage tips

  • -Twist leaves off before storing, leaving 3-4 cm of stalk to reduce bleeding
  • -Do not wash before storing - brush off loose soil only
